Conjunctive Adverbs

1. When John came I was absent.

2. I know not where he dwells.

3. I know a bank whereon the wild thyme grows.

4. Louis watched the baby while his mother worked.

5. Children are happy whenever they do their best.

By a study of the above sentences, we see that the italicized words are used to connect the clauses with the principal statements. They also have an adverbial force. Such words are called conjunctive adverbs.

A conjunctive adverb is a word used both as a conjunction and as an adverb.
